Facts on Obesity

There are a number of fascinating facts on obesity. One of which is in the past decade, there has been a substantial increase in overweight people in industrialized countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called obesity an "epidemic".

Some other interesting facts on obesity are that in the United States alone, 33 percent of their population (which is roughly 60 million people) are overweight. In Canada, anywhere from 10 to 25 percent of teenagers and 20 to 50 percent of all adults have a weight problem.

The facts on obesity concerning children are quite shocking. With obesity rates among both children and teens quickly on the rise, blame is often placed is often placed on them for spending more time watching TV, playing video games and eating 'junk food'. The risk of health problems increase that were once only seen in adults. Another one of the facts on obesity is that health risks include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, joint problems, liver problems, poor sleep, type 2 diabetes and possibly depression. Of course overweight children have an extreme chance of becoming overweight as an adult.

Some facts on obesity you may not have known is that health risks including:

  2. Heart disease.
  3. Cancer.
  4. Gall bladder disease.
  5. Sleep apnea.

These disease can affect obese adults more than those who are at a healthy weight. Something like this can take away enjoyment from your life.

Psychological factors may also foster obesity. Guilt, emotional stress, low self-esteem, or trauma can lead to over-eating. Facts on obesity have shown that the more obese a person is, the more likely they are to have both medical and emotional problems.
